Dutton to re-contest Dickson

21 October 2009

The Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton has announced he will re-contest the seat at the next federal election.

Mr Dutton this week nominated for LNP preselection for Dickson.

The electoral redistribution in Queensland would make it a tough fight to retain the seat, Mr Dutton said.

He said over recent weeks he had been contacted by hundreds of people expressing their support for him.

“I have been very humbled and overwhelmed by the level of support,” he said.

“I’ve listened to those people and arrived at my decision to re-contest Dickson at the upcoming federal election.”

“My job is to work hard for the local community as we go forward. I’ve achieved a lot locally and I believe that I’ve got something to offer into the future. People know I will fight and work hard.”

“The Labor candidate, Ms McNamara has decided to run a negative campaign against me, exactly as Cheryl Kernot did in 2001.”

“If Ms McNamara wants to follow in Cheryl Kernot’s footsteps that is an issue for her, I will be running a positive campaign.”

Mr Dutton said the Rudd Labor Government in Canberra was following the path of the failed Bligh Government.

“They’re ramping up debt and mortgaging the future of Australians for the next generation.”

“Kevin Rudd promised to fix our hospitals, but they are just getting worse and not a cent of the billions of dollars of stimulus spending went to health,” he said.

“I will work hard with the people of Dickson to take the fight up to Labor – locally, at the state and federal level.”
